How to get involved!
- Become a Team Captain: Take on the responsibility of being the leader and motivator for your team. Recruit a Co-Captain so you can support each other. Be the communication link between your team and the Cancer Society. Support, motivate and excite your team and help them meet your fundraising goals.
- Become a Corporate Sponsor: Sponsorship from local businesses helps to off-set the cost of staging Relay events and ensures all the money raised goes directly to the services we offer. Businesses can donate in cash or in-kind. Please contact your local Cancer Society to find out how you can help.
- Join the Organising Committee: Staging an event like Relay For Life requires a dedicated and energetic committee of volunteers. Volunteers with creative ideas, generosity of spirit and time to share are always appreciated.
- Share your talents: Trackside entertainment is a huge part of the vibrant and festive atmosphere at Relay For Life. If you’ve got talent and are willing to share it, we want to hear from you!
- Support a Relay For Life Team: Apart from donating to team fundraising, there are many ways you can support team members. Over Relay weekend, join the hundreds of other supporters trackside and cheer on team members. Offer to help with refreshments, keep an eye on gear or babysit.
If you can help in any of the above ways
please Contact your local Cancer Society
as soon as possible.
Other ways to be involved
- Share your survivorship: Cancer survivors and their carers are Relay’s guests of honour. If you have experienced a cancer diagnosis or cared for some one with cancer, then we would like to host you as our VIP at Relay. Join us for the Opening Lap of Honour and other hospitality events throughout the weekend. Please contact your local Cancer Society for more details.
- Join in the Candlelight Ceremony: This is the defining element of Relay – a time to remember those lost to cancer and to show our support for those living with cancer. If you have lost a loved one, decorate a candle bag in memory of them and place it on the track during the Candlelight Ceremony, along with hundreds of others.
- Be a Relay Champion: Champion the Relay cause with everyone you meet, email or phone. Tell them why you are relaying and what it’s all about. The person you are speaking to may be nurturing their own poignant cancer story.
- Become a community advocate for cancer control: You can support the work of the Cancer Society by making submissions to Government or by staying in touch with us and supporting our submissions. There are many opportunities for the community to help influence government health policies. Click here www.ProtectourChildren.org.nz to see an example of how the Cancer Society health promotion team are supporting a total ban on the display of cigarettes in retail outlets.
- Be Cancer Smart! Learn more about being cancer smart at Relay and then adopt a healthy lifestyle in your daily routines to reduce your risk of cancer and improve your general well-being. Also check out the Livesmart and Sunsmart links or visit your local Cancer Society office.
A Team Captain recently said that his Relay highlights were
“seeing my wife complete the Survivors Lap and meeting so many wonderful people.”
