“Relay is a team event for people of any age and level of fitness. Corporate groups, families, youth and service groups, community and sporting clubs participate together - everyone is welcome”
Here’s just some of the things you can do to get involved - you don't have to join the Committee or be on the track!
- Join the Organising COMMITTEE. The organising of Relay For Life events requires a dedicated and energetic committee. Volunteers with creative ideas and generosity of spirit are always appreciated so we can make this an event for everyone to remember.
- Become a TEAM CAPTAIN. Carry out FUNdraising with an enthusiasm that supports, motivates and excites your team. Recruit a co-captain so you can support each other. Enjoy leading on ideas and providing thoughtful inspiration like dedicating your team's efforts to a cancer survivor.
- PERFORM at Relay For Life. Trackside entertainment is a huge part of the vibrant and moving atmosphere and you can volunteer to entertain the crowds.
- Share the dusk Candlelight Ceremony. Honour those who have passed with a Tribute Candle Bag that you can personalise for your loved one. Lay it on the track at the dusk ceremony with hundreds of others that stand as testament to those being honored and that illuminate the track for the night. You can purchase the candle bag prior to, or at Relay. Contact your local Cancer Society.
- Share your survivorship. Survivors are honoured guests in both the Opening Ceremony and Lap and also at hospitality events throughout the weekend. Join with other cancer survivors and share your stories and experiences as part of your special activities - you don’t have to be part of a team. Please contact your local Cancer Society.
- Be a Champion. Champion the Relay cause with everyone you meet, email, or telephone. Come up with a witty or challenging phrase that you can drop in to conversations in order to generate curiosity and raise awareness. The person you are speaking with may be nurturing their own, poignant cancer story.
- Support a Relay Team. Join the hundreds of supporters cheering team members on the track; transport team members as they FUNdraise; make cups of tea; keep an eye on gear; babysit; join in spontaneous FUNdraising on the night.
- Become a community advocate for cancer control. You can support the work of the Cancer Society by making submissions to Government or by staying in touch with us and supporting ours; there are many opportunities for the community to influence government health policies. Click here www.ProtectourChildren.org.nz to see an example of how the Cancer Society health promotion team are supporting a total ban on the display of cigarettes in retail outlets.
- BE CANCER SMART! Learn more about being cancer smart at Relay and then adopt a healthy lifestyle in your daily routines to reduce your risk of cancer and improve your general well-being. Also check out the Livesmart and Sunsmart links or visit your local Cancer Society office.
